Corn growers in the Beef Pit

Share:
For more than 25 years, the Nebraska Cattlemen Beef Pit has been serving up prime rib, roast beef and BBQ brisket meals to those at the Nebraska State Fair. And this year is no different (nor will it be different next year...as the Beef Pit is moving, with the State Fair, to Grand Island).

In fact, the number of meals served during the opening weekend this year was up about 25 percent over last year, according to this Brownfield report. The Brownfield page includes a good interview with Beef Pit volunteer and cattle feeder Joel Bruns of Pender.

Today, like they do every year, a number of corn farmers, Nebraska Corn Growers staff and Nebraska Corn Board staff volunteered during the 11 am to 4 pm shift at the Beef Pit...doing there part to serve hungry fairgoers (you can see some in the photo below).

The corn groups also donate serviceware and drink cups -- both made from renewable, corn-based bioplastics. In fact, raw PLA is a corn-based plastic material made right here in Nebraska. PLA is then made into all sorts of things -- from serviceware to cups to gift cards to deli food cases to mobile phones. (For more, click here or here.)

Thanks to Mat Habrock of the Nebraska Corn Growers Association for the photo and details.
